How Evolutions Work in EA FC Ultimate Team

Evolutions let you upgrade a player over time. Here's how to pick the right base card, meet the requirements, and avoid wasting a good Evolution on the wrong player.

Evolutions are one of the best value features in Ultimate Team: they take a card you already own and upgrade its stats, PlayStyles, and sometimes even its position over time, for coins or points rather than the transfer market. Used well, an Evolution can turn a cheap card into a starter you keep all year.

What an Evolution actually does

Each Evolution has a set of upgrades and a set of entry requirements. A card that meets the requirements can be entered, then earns the upgrades by completing challenges — playing matches, scoring, assisting, and so on. The upgrades can raise attributes, add PlayStyles or PlayStyles+, and add playable positions, which is often more valuable than the raw rating bump.

Choosing the right base card

This is the decision that matters most. Because the requirements cap things like maximum rating, pace, or existing PlayStyles, the best base card is usually the one that is closest to the cap in the areas the Evolution won't upgrade, and weakest in the areas it will.

  • Match the upgrade to a genuine weakness — an Evolution that adds pace is wasted on an already-fast card.
  • Respect the caps. If the entry limit is 84 overall or 82 pace, a card just under the line gets the most out of the upgrade.
  • Value new positions highly. Turning a great card into one that also plays where you need it is often the real prize.
  • Prefer a card you'll actually use — an Evolution is locked to that player, so pick one that fits your team long term.

Plan before you commit

Once a card is in an Evolution it usually cannot be sold, so treat entry as a commitment. Read the full list of upgrades and challenges first and picture the finished card. If the end result would still sit on your bench, save the Evolution slot for a base card that will make your first XI.
