Chemistry is the quiet multiplier behind every good Ultimate Team squad. Two teams with the same overall rating can play completely differently, and chemistry is usually why. This guide explains how the modern EA SPORTS FC chemistry system works and how to get the most out of it without overspending.
What chemistry does
Each player on the pitch can hold between 0 and 3 chemistry points. The more points a player has, the larger the boost applied to their in-game attributes. A player on 3 chemistry feels noticeably sharper — better passing, more reliable finishing, quicker reactions — than the same card on 0. Chemistry never lowers a card below its base stats; it only adds on top, so the goal is simply to push as many key players to 3 as you can.
Where chemistry comes from
Chemistry is built from links — how many players you field from the same club, league, and nation. Each of the three has three thresholds, and a player's chemistry is the sum of the tiers they qualify for, capped at 3:
- Club: 2 players = +1, 4 = +2, 7 = +3.
- League: 3 players = +1, 5 = +2, 8 = +3.
- Nation: 2 players = +1, 5 = +2, 8 = +3.
So a striker who shares a league with four other cards (+2) and a nation with one other card (+1) lands on full 3 chemistry, even with no clubmate on the pitch. You almost never need all three maxed for one player — you just need the tiers to add up to 3.
Position matters
A player only earns chemistry when they are in a position their card can play. Put a natural ST at ST and they contribute to and receive chemistry normally; drop that same ST at CM and they sit on 0 and stop contributing links to teammates. Playable alternate positions count, so check a card's secondary positions before you assume a slot is a mistake. When you build in the FutCheck Squad Builder, position mismatches are easy to spot because the affected players stop lighting up.
Icons and Heroes are wildcards
Icons and Heroes are the cheapest way to unlock chemistry across an otherwise disconnected squad. Icons count toward every league at once and give a strong nation boost, which lets you link players who share nothing else. Heroes give a powerful boost to their specific league plus their nation. A single well-placed Icon can lift two or three surrounding players from 1 or 2 up to full chemistry — often a better spend than buying a more expensive card for the same slot.
Practical tips
- Build around a spine. Pick a league or nation you want to base the team on, then fill outward so the thresholds fall into place naturally.
- Don't chase 3 club links. Club is the hardest tier to hit (7 for +3); league and nation usually get you to full chemistry far more cheaply.
- Use a manager loan or the right league/nation manager where available to nudge borderline players over a threshold.
- Prioritise chemistry on your finishers and creators first. A striker or playmaker on 3 chemistry returns more than a full-back on 3.
Test it before you buy
The fastest way to learn chemistry is to experiment without spending coins. Drop players into the Squad Builder, watch the links update live, and swap in cheaper alternatives to see whether chemistry holds. Once the shape works on paper, you can buy the exact cards you need with confidence instead of guessing in the transfer market.
